Mercier captured British India at a crucial historical moment, showing territorial boundaries and place names as they existed during the final years of colonial rule. Mercier's background in commercial art shows in his approach. He balanced cartographic accuracy with visual appeal, creating something that works both as historical documentation and wall art. The boundaries, place names, and territorial divisions reveal how British administrators organized the region.
